The Best Breast Augmentation Candidates
_

Most women can see excellent results from breast implants. Some of the reasons women consider breast augmentation include:

  • Small breasts
  • Loss of breast volume due to age or weight loss
  • Asymmetrical breasts

For women who are concerned with sagging or deflated breasts, a combined breast lift with augmentation can improve shape, volume, and placement at the same time. Breast enhancement is also commonly included as part of a mommy makeover.

    After Your Breast Augmentation
    _

Recovery times after getting breast implants can vary widely. Dr. Mariotti uses particular care when creating the breast implant pocket, a surgical technique that reduces trauma during surgery.

This approach, combined with the use of long-lasting local anesthetic around the implant, can help you enjoy a more comfortable recovery.

Following your breast augmentation, you can go home with some minimal bandaging to cover your incisions. Dr. Mariotti will give you specific breast implant massage instructions to follow.

Any discomfort should be easily controlled with oral pain medication. You can shower and wash your hair the next morning and you should be up and around the next day. You can expect to resume light activity or a desk job with no lifting in 3 to 5 days.

If you have a more active job, plan on 2 weeks. After that, choosing the special occasion to reveal your new look is up to you!

    Breast Augmentation FAQs

The decision between breast implant types is usually a matter of personal preference. The natural look and feel of silicone breast implants have made them the more popular choice for most women, but many women can still see very nice results from saline implants. Dr. Mariotti will discuss the pros and cons of each implant type during your consultation.

In almost all cases, Dr. Mariotti recommends placing the implant beneath the muscle. Sub-muscular breast implant placement can lower risks for capsular contracture as well as minimize the chances for visible rippling or wrinkling.

Breast augmentation incision placement depends on the type of implants, your unique needs and personal preference. The most common options are along the breast crease (inframammary incision), along the lower edge of the areola (periareolar) and in the armpit (transaxillary). At our practice, we’ve found the inframammary incision provides the best results for the majority of women. The small scar typically flattens, fades and is often concealed nicely by the fullness of the breast.

While breast augmentation shouldn’t affect your ability to breastfeed, be sure you let Dr. Mariotti know whether this is a concern for you during your consultation. The periareolar incision has the highest chance of disrupting the milk ducts, so a different incision location would be best in this case.

Initially, the breasts will look and feel tight, which is normal and temporary. Early post-operative swelling takes about 2 weeks to resolve. Although your breast implants may look good sooner, seeing your final breast augmentation results typically takes approximately 6 to 8 weeks.

The average cost of breast augmentation in the United States is $3,824, according to 2018 data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. However, this does not include additional costs like anesthesia and operating room facilities. The cost of your breast enhancement will depend on a number of factors, including any add-on procedures you might wish to include.

First, look for board certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. During your consultation, ask how many breast augmentations this plastic surgeon has performed in the past. Finally, evaluate the facility for cleanliness, organization and friendly, professional staff.

Schedule a consultation with your top two or three picks. You should be able to establish a rapport with your plastic surgeon and feel comfortable discussing your goals and asking questions.

No, you shouldn’t feel a thing during your procedure. Breast augmentation is typically performed under general anesthesia.

Plan to take around 4 to 7 days off work after breast augmentation.

Yes, proper massage techniques can help to aid in the healing process. Dr. Mariotti will give you specific massage instructions as part of your post-op care guidelines.

It can take up to 6 months to see your final results, although you should start to see the beginnings of your final outcome taking shape around the 1- to 2-month mark.
